Some people have come to see the idiocy in war and have even written about it in poems, short stories, etc. One of these people, Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, has mocked this absurd and pointless practice. Twain’s essay The War Prayer satirizes the customs of praying for safety and victory in war and for equating war with patriotism.
Later on, he found a small vein of silver. He stopped prospecting and started a job in the newspaper business again. This is where he got his pen name Mark Twain, which is steamboat slang for 12 feet of water. One of his stories in the newspaper was printed around the country. In the first part of the story, Twain shows the towns patriotism towards the soldiers. He says it was “a time of great and exalting excitement” then a few lines later says the people were “choked with happy emotion” and “tears running down their cheeks”.
