The Trouble with Addiction The adrenalin and rush you get from stepping foot in a casino, hearing the machines ring, watching players slide their chips across the table to win some money, and the dealer sliding his cards to play a hand at the table to some, is the best feeling in the world, better than anything else. In recent days, it is almost incredibly way too common to have some kind of true addiction whether it be eating food, nail biting, or in Angie Bachmann’s case, gambling. One must think that their everyday routine they perform is nowhere close to what an addictions is, but when you are in a position of debt with a casino, it has now become a serious problem. What would have made this women less responsible for her case, is that she spoke to her family and said she had felt that they were not present enough in her life and what they could do as a united family to rekindle that bond. Duhigg has explained in earlier chapters of his book that in life a habit or addiction all starts with a cue that triggers our routine, in which we ultimately find our reward, basically what we are getting out of doing all of this in the first place. The cue for Angie was the disconnection of family, so her routine of going to the casino would take place, and her reward of feeling her “tensions float away” is the reason she would do it all in the first place. The idea of all of that is the habit loop and unfortunately, her habit loop was something extremely negative.
