The SPCA stands for society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, their goal is to just animals all over the United States. They do many things to help all kinds of animals but the biggest thing that they do is rescue them from cruel owners or terrible living conditions. This organization is a government funded program that is expanding more and more every year. It is the largest humane society in the world and are now starting to go international into more countries like Brazil. They deal with any kind of animal that they may encounter including exotic animals. It all started when animals were still used for work such as horses drawing carriages, pulling farm equipment, and staged fighting to turn a profit. They help pass laws against animal cruelty first against horse pulling a carriage, since all the drivers cared about was pushing the horses as hard as they could go. Eventually laws came into effect for dogs and other animals as time went on. They first came into the United States almost 40 years later, settling in New York city. There a lot of spay and neuter overseas programs currently going on in Guatemala, Tanzania, Panama, Thailand, and Ecuador to stop the over population of pets. Thus, slowing down the amount of euthanization of dogs and cats because most of the animals in those third world countries are strays and more of just a nuisance to humans. They have also done things like typhoon relief in the Philippines for animals and their owners. Volunteers would fly out loaded down with supplies and give out rations of food and water to those in affected by the typhoon, while working with other countries providing for the less fortunate. Another example is that they are supporting opening shelters in Romania where dogs are neglected, starved, and killed.
