Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is the story of an ordinary farm being overthrown by the animals residing there. The animals living on Manor Farm suffer from mistreatment and cruelty from Mr. Jones, the owner of the farm. One night, an old boar on the verge of death, gathers the animals around and describes his vision of a farm being run by no humans and where everyone is equal. He teaches the other animals a song, Beasts of England, to inspire them for a rebellion, which comes earlier than imagined with the animals turning and chasing Jones and his men off the farm. The animals won the fight and made up for the years of torture and abuse they had had from the humans. Orwell writes, “There was not an animal on the farm that did not take vengeance on them in their own fashion”(42). This victory and beating of the farmers was a moment that I was cheering for. Although I don’t condone violence, I was rooting and hoping that the animals would fight and defend against the farmers who had abused them. He was supposed to be going to the vet for injured hoof when the the side of the van to take him away read, “Alfred Simmonds, Horse Slaughterer and Glue Boiler, Dealer in Hides and Bone-Meal”(122). At this moment I recognized the betrayal and treachery of the pigs, who had promised to take him to the vet.. For me, Boxer had been the loyal, genuinely good character on the farm. He was the truly innocent one who didn’t deserve this fate and I was saddened at his death. Slightly later in the book, it is revealed that the pigs had taken that money from Boxer and used it to buy alcohol for their own pleasure(126).
