Animal Farm focuses on a group of animals that conquer the farm in which they serve as slaves, but another pig rises up to be in charge. This novel is also a dig at the Soviet Union when Stalin rises up and takes charge. George Orwell published Animal Farm under Secker and Warburg on August 17, 1945. The responses to the book when it first came out were not positive, one critic saying, “It seemed on the whole dull” (American New Republic).
