Heartbreaks never come with a warning or an instruction manual on how to repair the emotional damage that dwells within oneself. Instead you have to look deeper inside yourself to find the strength to guide you out; if not all light pointing towards the end of the tunnel disappears leaving you trapped in what society calls depression. I remember being twenty lost within my own dark depression with no direction or guidance to the end of this very rough road id headed down. I lost sight of where my own strength had gone. I would lay in bed for what felt like weeks on top of months. It wasn’t until my precious puppy came into my life that I begin to see a faint light shining through all the darkness that had corrupted me of my free spirit. She became my strength. What if Animal Therapy could replace medicines like antidepressants or even antianxiety medications? Wouldn’t that be a wonderful thing not to have to worry about taking a pill every morning, but instead waking up to endless kisses or coming home to an animal that unconditionally loves you despite the day that you just endured? I decided to research this a little deeper. I have found that studies show Animal Therapy initiates the release of oxytocin; which aids in the relaxation process. Leading to decrease in anxiety and stress (O’Haire & Guérin, 2015). I also found that Animal Therapy is highly related to increases in socialization by encouraging a safe and open environment, which allows people to be more open to discussing problems (Dietz & Davis, 2012). This research not only suggest that Animal Therapy could be of therapeutic use, but also suggests that many others have experienced the same type of effects animals can have on humans as I
