In this essay I’ll be comparing Anne Sullivan’s Graduation Speech against Paulo Friere’s “Banking” Concept of Education. Anne Sullivan was an American teacher, instructor and lifelong companion of Hellen Keller. She gave her speech on July 1, 1886 at the Perkins Institute for the Blind on the day of her and her fellow classmate’s graduation, since she was chosen Valedictorian. Paulo Friere was a Brazilian educator and philosopher who was a leading advocate of critical pedagogy that shaped the modern concept and approaches to education.

The tone of Paulo Friere’s essay is informative as well as condemning, he let us know of the current teaching method and a way to improve it while also criticizing the teaching system in which the teachers are “depositors” and the students are “depositories”. The tone of Anne Sullivan’s speech is that of a fellow classmate, a friend, it is familiar and compassionate, her speech makes us listen, it relates to us and it will help guide us, we will remember her words to use our education for the greater good.

The structure of Anne Sullivan’s speech is short, straight to the point while still delivering her message, colloquial, and holds a coherence order. The structure of Paulo Friere’s essay is a long one in which he use various examples and different ways and ideas to address the problem, includes many points, formal, explains his ideas completely, supports his belief in a new teaching system and holds a coherence
