Slavery created division of United States, one side supported slavery and the other opposed. The Northern people didn’t need slaves due to the very little amount of agriculture they had, whereas in the South where they had much more agriculture, they felt they needed the slaves. When it came to civil rights, finding the right person to lead an entire population into freedom was a pretty important problem. The two most important leaders in the Civil Rights Movement were Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, and they were respected by a large portion of the black community in America. Although, when it came the troubling issues of segregation, both of schools and in everyday activities, and the violent approach to fight racism v.s. the non violent approach, Martin Luther King Jr. was a better person to lead black americans. The Reconstruction period was an important first step in the effort to secure civil rights and economic power for the former slaves. During the period of 1865 to 1905, the lives of African Americans in the South changed vastly. Civil rights for the African American community were ensured by the Reconstruction Amendments which outlawed slavery, granted citizenship to everyone born within the United States, and guaranteed the right to vote. For many African Americans, freedom meant independence from white control. In the wake of advancing Union armies, millions of black southerners sought to secure that freedom with economic opportunity, which for many meant land ownership.
A big part of our history is the challenges different races had to face when fighting for their rights. There are groups in today’s society that are still battling oppression, even though they were granted rights by our government. It seems like when one door opens, another closes right in their face. One race that had to deal with oppression, and is still dealing with it today, is African Americans. Africans Americans were brought over to the United States to be slaves for Caucasian people.

I define intersectionality as having different life experiences and multiple identities that intersect. For example, the EOP program here on campus helps students who are first generation college students. They often have specific needs and obstacles. These students are sometimes below the poverty line.
