The article states that there have been several controversies in the history of psychopathology regarding gender identity as well as sexual orientation. These debates are still hot topics in the current gender dysphoria reformulations in the Statistical and Diagnostic Manual as well as the International Classification of Diseases. It sets forth that it is possible to address disputative issues only after appreciating the relevant psychiatric concepts and knowledge. Individuals with gender dysphoria experience an atypical mind state which is dissimilar to that which other people experience and can decide to put on clothing which members of the “opposite gender” wear. The authors argue that some people usually cross-dress to be sexually aroused, while others do so for entertainment purposes. They consider psychotherapy as an efficient way of helping those with gender dysphoria since it is helpful to explore the probability of feeling more contented in their bodies. It can also be useful in guiding and educating them about the process of change. Other methods of treatment include administering masculinizing and feminizing hormones. Someone transitioning to a female body can undergo breast augmentation as well as a surgical construction of vagina, clitoris, and vulva, while individuals transitioning to a male body can undergo a bilateral mastectomy. The researchers carried out a methodical literature search using Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Medline. The review of texts about ASD in teenagers and kids suffering from gender dysphoria revealed that ASD was more prevalent among those with gender dysphoria as compared to other people. The authors state that one study exposed that grownups who attend gender dysphoria services had increased scores of ASD. A review of another study indicated that a significant percentage of adults with abnormal gender identity had ASD.
