Maintaining a professional boundary in nursing can be difficult at times. With the use of social media one can easily cross the nurse-patient boundary. I’m sure the father was going through a very difficult time and was reaching out to someone he trusted. According the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (2014), “nurses can unintentionally blur the lines between their professional and personal lives” through social media (p.4).
However using social media in the healthcare setting is not completely ineffective, there are some benefits in utilizing them. For example, statistics, client education consensus and even event distribution, but specific information about a specific client can cause temporary enjoyment and permanent disruption. Social Media plays a massive part in how we think and act in modern-day society. Social Media not only entertains us through the use of influencers and different but also messes with our perceptions of political groups and different movements without us even realizing it. I'd like to refer to it as a method of unconscious brain control that occurs without our knowledge. Users from all over the world can now share their own personal opinions on Twitter, Reddit, Tik Tok, and Instagram to be easily consumed by millions of people. These posts easily persuade a significant number of internet users, who start to agree with them depending on how many interactions they receive rather than doing their own fact-checking.
These professionals, such as myself, must abide by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) regulations while on and off duty. Meaning, we, as healthcare professionals, are not permitted to speak of or post information that could potentially identify a patient (Shay, 2012). In fact, social media usage can pose as a threat of improper disclosure of patient’s protected information (Shay, 2012).

Nurses or students who do not follow this, are putting their registrations or ability to register at risk. Key points in this guidance includes not sharing private information regarding patients, posting photographs or comments about patients, pursuing relations with patients, or provoking hatred or discrimination online.

Why it is important: The use of technology and the increase in use of social media outlets are growing in numbers. Nurses are using the social media inappropriately and it is compromising the confidentiality and privacy of the patients. It is important for the nurses to be mindful of patient’s privacy and confidentiality. Violation in patient’s privacy and confidentiality comes with a price. It can cost a nurse civil and criminal penalty, including fines and possible jail time.
It helped me broaden my question as it exposed me to more topic rather than just social media helping physician popularity.
