Social Media.

It is a staple of human life, and yet also the bane of our existence. The brightest promise, of the century. The darkest dawn, in that it may well bring about the end of Humanity.

It is such a large part of our lives now, that as much as 67 percent of people using the Internet have a social media account. 3.68 billion people use the Internet, more than half of the world’s population as of 2015. You can do the math. Needless to say, the numbers are staggering and worrying.

When discussions about social media inevitably arise, the numbers often astound and astonish, even the most stoic of us are nonplussed. How many social media accounts does an average Internet user have? Have a guess. One? Two? Three?

Three hours, that had you used on something more productive, would mean you would be a heck of a lot more successful than you are right now. It might not seem a lot right now, but that’s one eighth of your life you use up, for social media alone. You sleep a quarter of your life away, and together with social media, three eighths of your life you waste away, not even counting television and other forms of entertainment we indulge in.
Is this what you want to regret later in your life?

Unfortunately, many don’t even realise it. You get entrapped in the World Wide Web and become more and more reliant on it. Your brain starts to release dopamine when you go on social media, a potent hormone that can leave you feeling higher than weed.

And when you realise it and try to correct it, you start getting withdrawal syndromes. Being unable to sleep, to eat. Constantly worrying over how many likes and comments your latest post is getting. And it’s statistically harder to quit than alcohol and cigarettes, according to a study conducted by the University of Chicago, not least of all because it’s encouraged. Cigarettes and alcohol aren’t socially accepted, and we’re all educated about the dangers since we’re mere children. We’re told it’s harmful for our bodies, and that once you’re addicted you won’t be able to
