Literary devices consist of narrative techniques that add texture, energy, and excitement to the narrative, grip the reader's imagination and convey information. Anton applies literary devices such as irony, over exaggeration, imagery, etc. to create meaning to his theme, tone, or characters of the play. He mainly uses over exaggeration and similes to portray his purpose of the play which is to show the domestic problems of the middle-class and how the upper-class treat these problems. One of the many literary devices Anton uses to create the meaning of the play is hyperboles. One example of an over exaggeration in this play is when the General yells at Cherdyakov for bothering him about the sneeze and then sneezing on him for the second time, “You insect! Anton’s choice of words helps portray how the General feels about Cherdyakov pestering him over an incident that he already forgave him for and how annoyed he is about the fact that people of a lower class disturb and bother people of a higher class. Furthermore, the author shows the true character of the General by including him insulting Cherdyakov for his recent behavior against to represent how people of the wealthy class treat people of the lower/average class. Another literary device Anton placed in his play is similes. An example of Anton using similes is was when the writer is describing the way Cherdyakov sneezes, “…And then, quite suddenly, without any warning, like a bolt from a gray thundering sky, Ivan Ilyitch Cherdyakov reared his head back, and…” (884). Anton illustrates the sneezed to show the reader how quick and sudden the sneeze is. This helps the reader understand how unexpected the sneeze was for
