Ultimately, the term antisemitism is a modern phenomenon, but the concept behind antisemitism is not as modern as the term. Anti-Jewish sentiment has been in existence for centuries as there have always been groups of individuals who demonstrated, either openly or not, their prejudice and hostility toward Jews. More specifically, it is apparent that Jewish hatred began before the time of modernity as witnessed through the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 as well as after modernity, as in during the Enlightenment and late 19th Century Germany.
