Anton Chekhov:
Most authors will write stories using ideas that he or she have experienced in his or her life. This is true in the books by Anton Chekhov, he uses many things that happened in his life for the inspiration of his short stories. Many connections can be made between the life of Anton Chekhov and the short stories in the book Forty Stories. Not only did Chekhov write about his experiences in life he also included many aspects of Russian culture in his short stories.
The best connection between Anton Chekhov’s life and his writings is the way he writes about love. As stated in Anton Chekhov’s biography by Gerhard Brand and Christian H. Anton Chekhov’s father was the main reason for Chekhov growing up with a different life than most other boys, in Russia. Anton Chekhov’s father, Pavel Yegorovich Chekhov, did not let any of his seven children grow up with normal lives (Short). Pavel Chekhov was a grocer who often took advantage of his children and with by overworking them. Pavel Chekhov kept his children from playing and forced them to attend church (Short). Chekhov said in a letter about his childhood “We felt like little convicts at hard labor.” Normal Russian children would have learned how to hunt and fish from their father. This may be one of the main reasons why Anton Chekhov writes many stories where the main characters find themselves doing these outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. One short story, ”St. Peter’s Day”, is completely about hunting (Chekhov and Payne 11).
