Compare and Contrast Essay Which speech was more persuasive, Brutus’s or Antony’s? Both speeches were very persuasive to their audiences, but only one was more successful than the other. One must look at these and decide who was better. Therefore, one must look at the similarities to find their strongest points and to see how they drawn in the crowd. Not only that, but also locate the key differences to find their flaws, or to find out how they executed their speeches with different approaches. Above all, the true victor, of persuasion, was Antony. Brutus and Antony had quite a few comparable moments within their speeches. Both Brutus and Antony managed to analyze their audiences, and in doing so, they used it for their own advantage. Brutus uses logic and his honor to Rome, (III, ii, 14-17) while Antony uses his emotions. In addition, Brutus explains he killed Caesar for he was too ambitious, (III, ii, 27) meanwhile, Antony explains that Brutus did an act of terror, (III, ii, 191-192). Brutus sought to calm down the citizens with his speech, but Antony sought to persuade the citizens to revolt against Brutus and his conspirators (III, ii, 164-192). After piecing together the evidence it’s clear that Antony had delivered the better persuasive speech. Antony’s speech was much more persuasive than Brutus’s speech. Throughout Antony’s speech, he successfully used the aspect of pathos. Antony revealed his emotions with the plebeians throughout his speech, but (III, ii, 164-192) was the most memorable. Antony used sarcasm towards Brutus and his conspiracy, calling them “honorable men”, (III,ii, 97). Overall, Antony knew his audience well.
