REFLECTIVE CAMPAIGN PAPER
Back in October, I volunteered for the candidate Joe Murray, an Alexandria resident who recently ran for Virginia’s 39th District Senate seat, which includes parts of Fairfax County, the city of Alexandria and Prince William County. A Republican candidate, Murray advertises himself as the “Conservative Choice” for Senate. Both a husband and father of two young children and a dedicated public servant and community volunteer, Joe Murray has over ten years of experience on Capitol Hill with expertise in health care and education. My specific responsibility consisted of canvassing and addressing letters to absentee voters. In canvassing I was given a list of addresses in a neighborhood for people who were most likely to vote. If no one came to the door, I would leave a door hanger. If someone did answer the door, I would talk to them about my candidate and inform them of issues my candidate was focusing on and what he would do if he were to be elected as State Senate. On the paper which listed the addresses, I would mark down any notes on appearances of the person or their surroundings, such as “American flag” or “Catholic cross.” This would give a better idea of the person and their political leanings. In addition, there was a scale of 1 to 5. The number one meant the person was fully supportive of the candidate and five meant they were voting for the opposing candidate. After speaking with them, I would mark down whether the person showed interested or little interest. After canvassing, I was assigned to address letters to absentee voters. These letters were fliers filled with facts about Joe Murray and written on them were our small messages thanking them for supporting him. These fliers were sent out for those who applied for absentee ballots as they were unable to be present at the polls. Other volunteers made phone calls or hung up campaign
