It was an intuitive decision for me to choose what I would like to study at university. I want to pursue geography because it is a comprehensive subject which enables us to find resolutions to global issues. Personally, I am concerned with the dire issue of climate change and its implications on the wider world, especially because of human activities which have exacerbated the scale of our climate crisis. If it is not prevented now, it will transform the future of both humanity and the physical environment. This study meant that I conducted independent research, exercised effective time management and learned new skills such as referencing, whilst inspecting the fundamental flaws of our consumerist society. By reading Naomi Klein’s “This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate”, I have been able to explore and critique how our global economic systems promote environmental degradation, and why certain groups and large corporations deny climate change and the importance of organisations like the United Nations and the European Union on their efforts in enforcing programmes and agreements. I have been able to further my knowledge outside the curriculum through using online courses. For instance, I completed a Future Learn course titled “New Energy Technologies” which discussed the sustainability of energy consumption and the implications of certain methods for the future. I have recently entered an essay competition titled “Why is it so difficult to solve climate change?” which encouraged me to explore the barriers which are hindering our progress to tackling climate change like apathy, nationalism, human nature, economics and our dependency on fossil
