I chose this question to write my dissertation about as it is something that I have previously thought about and taken into consideration. English Lit is not an A-Level subject I have chosen and so I feel as though it will be something different from what I am doing- Physics, Chemistry and Psychology- and will enable me to broaden my thoughts and knowledge on something new. Due to the fact that Van Gogh used lead based paints, some believed he had suffered from lead poisoning (from nibbling at paint chips). One of the symptoms of lead poisoning is swelling of the retinas which can cause one to see light in circles like halos around objects. This can be seen in paintings such as ‘The Starry Night’, where a hue of yellow surrounds each star in the sky, including the moon.
