At the beginning of the novel, Dorothy is displeased with her domestic and mundane life and strongly wishes for adventure. Without warning, she arrives in an unusual land of Oz, alone. Despite this, Dorothy courageously seeks out the wizard and for the most part, trusts the advice given to her by the witches, all women. Contesting the “damsel-in-distress” archetype, she relies on her own powers and resources and does not depend on the authority of others.
