Archetypes are present in numerous short stories. Archetypes can be found across multiple short stories and represent characters in a very effective way. Archetypes are present in numerous short stories. Archetypes are an example of a person or a thing that can be found across multiple types of literature. They are a more common way to show character types, and goals.
In "The Scarlet Letter," Pearl also personifies a brook by asking it "foolish and tiresome little brook…why art thou so sad?" In reality, Pearl is reflecting her own human emotions onto a non-living thing. The main character, Hester, also serves as a living personification of the scarlet letter she is branded with. Although the scarlet letter only signifies certain actions and the judgment of others, by taking ownership of the letter, Hester gives this non-living thing human qualities by making it a part of herself.
Characters in stories sometimes follow a theme when it comes to their traits. These traits are called archetypes. Archetypes can be as simple as a villain or hero. They can also be used to portray unfathomable human characteristics that exists in everyone. Characteristics such as greed, lust, envy, pride, sloth, and gluttony are examples.

An archetype is an image, a descriptive detail, a plot pattern, or a type of character that occurs multiple times in myth, literature, religion, or folk lore. Archetypes often provoke emotion in the reader as they awaken an image, calling illogical responses into play. Many novels, legends, and myth are made up of archetypes which causes similarities in the plots of many novels. For example, the Helper God, the golden place, seasons and metamorphosis are archetypes that make up modern literature and they make up prominent themes found within the novels containing those archetypes. Like these archetypes, the magical weapon archetype, which has only one true owner able to use it to its fullest potential, also is a prominent theme within literature and film creating a large part in the theme.
One of the themes in "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is what Karl Marx would call "rugged individualism." This concept is when someone sticks out in the masses, and has little to no regards of the customs of the society in which that person thrives in. Their traits can either benefit them, cause them detriment, or both simultaneously. Two of the main characters especially exemplify rugged individualism: Hester Prynne and the man who identifies himself as Roger Chillingworth. It can be inferred that Hester did not always agree with Puritan law and culture in the time leading up to her conviction.
Duality. The Unseen Side of Everything. Many people can agree with the fact that society can be a controlling, manipulative beast. It’s hand persistently reaches out and drags unsuspecting victims into depths known as conformity. Over time, many people develop masks of their own to hide from this beast and to be seen as a typical and average person.
We are all sinners. Although one may try hard not to sin, all humans eventually succumb at some time or another to sin. While people may not able to avoid the fate which awaits them, the power of free will allows people to decide how they will respond to sin. While some may respond with guilt and regret, others may react with a sense of redemption and a renewed sense of responsibility. Nathaniel Hawthorne, an American author during the 19th century witnessed the power of sin to wreak havoc not only to an individual but a whole community.
Imagine you are entering a garden. You take in the aroma of the air and feel the serenity as the environment affects you. Now imagine you are stranded in a forest. You look in all directions feeling lost and anxious about what might happen next. As you can see, settings that appear within a story can help us determine how a character must feel.
In the romantic novel, The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays Roger Chillingworth as the prime example of pure evil. Chillingworth is characterized as a symbol for evil because Hawthorne illustrates him and his thoughts as being associated with the devil and Hell. Through Hawthorne’s descriptions, Chillingworth’s malevolent ideas and eagerness to expose Hester Prynne and Reverend Dimmesdale are revealed. Consequently, Chillingworth serves as the antagonist in the novel because of his plot to seek vengeance on and torment Dimmesdale. Through the use of figurative language and syntax, Chillingworth’s description and his actions symbolize him as a mysterious and wild evil doing the devil’s bidding.
