“We want a disruption free environment.” As you can see girls are targeted unfairly by the dress code, making them feel ashamed and guilty of their bodies. If someone can wear a bright yellow costume then girls should be allowed to show their bra strap, shoulder, or midriff. Many girls are dress coded for their bra strap, shoulders, or midriff. When a girl is walking down the hallway and gets dress coded for being able to see her midriff, no one is able to see her midriff when she’s pulled up to her desk.
“Dress codes teach students that conformity and obedience to authority are most important.” As you can see dress codes don’t tell you to stay focused on schoolwork, they tell you that girls are a distraction and that boys lack self control to stay undistracted. In this quote you see that people in charge decide rules, including dress codes, without thinking them through. Dress codes aren’t thought through, they are implemented with the only reason being so there aren’t any disruptions. In reality boys don’t get ‘distracted’ just by seeing a girl’s bra strap, shoulder, or midriff.

Girls are treated unfairly, but also so are LGBT students. Studies show that nineteen percent of LGBT students were stopped from wearing clothes that were thought to be from the opposite sex. Also thirty two percent of transgender students were also dress coded for wearing clothes that weren’t from their legal sex.
