Imagine sitting in class taking notes, when a school administrator comes into the classroom, pulls one of the girls from class, and explains how they chose to dress is considered inappropriate and distracting. In most cases, girls of past generations as well as today’s generation do not have to imagine this. School dress code policies have been targeting girls for many years. While there have been attempts to change this policy or make it fair, there seem to be minimal to no changes. Research has shown that school dress codes tend to target girls rather than boys.
Ridgeview should make its dress code less strict because it’s unfair to girls with different body types and makes boys seem like they have no control over themselves. Girls should not have to worry about distracting boys with their clothes at school. They should be able to feel self confident, comfortable, and pretty in their clothing and bodies. Picture this, you just bought some new clothes at the mall and you can’t wait to wear them at school. You walk into school on Monday feeling comfortable and self-confident when an administrator stops you “Excuse me miss, your shorts are too short and your shirt shows your shoulders I’m going to need you to change.”
“More than 90% of dress codes prohibit clothing typically associated with girls”. As stated by Eesha Pendharkar(October 27, 2022). The dress code is in place to make sure students come to school in appropriate clothing. The problem with this is that most of the rules only seem to affect girls. Everywhere in the U.S. the dress code policy is effecting certain students well being, examples being self esteem, targeting female and trans students and unreasonable expectations.
It is no secret that the Dress codes target girls, to the dress codes being exposing bra straps, showing collarbone, wearing a simple tank top, dyeing hair, and piercings. When girl are told to be modest they are being sexualized. There should be nothing wrong with a girl wearing a comfortable shirt to school; but of course the shirt shows parts of the students’ collarbone, she cannot wear it again to school. For boys it’s simply your pants are too low pull them up and be on your way. On the other hand girls are taken out of their classes to call home for another pair of clothes.
I believe that being able to wear hood should be acceptable. I have logic reasons for this to change the dress code. The reasons why I believe that this should be common because it’s comfortable for wearing, use for cold classrooms, and for outside gym use. We aren’t allowed to wear hoods in school and that should change. First of all, wearing a hood over your head is pleasant.

Telling young women that they are distractions in class because of what they wear. Girls get sent home because of their outfits it makes it seem like the administration is not worried about whether or not they get an education. Many types of clothing d or that have such as leggings, low cut shirts, and shorts have been banned or have restrictions. It is hard to find clothes that meet all these requirements.
Dress codes are a necessary aspect of school, and they help teenagers to focus more in school. Rules for how to dress prevent boys and girls from being distracted by fancy clothing. Often times, girls tend to focus on what other girls are wearing and how other girls may look super attractive or trashy. In addition, boys look at girls who are dressed in very releasing clothing. Whether the person is a boy or girl, both become distracted by revealing or poor clothing.
School Dress codes do not allow students to completely express their individuality. Schools want students to be able to think for themselves and create a sense of who they are, but it is not easy when they are forced to abide by rules that take away from from that. It should be a place of expressing ourselves freely in a learning environment without having to worry about what we wear as an interfering issue. The fact that the school system cares more about the student dress code than their education is an issue in itself. Schools should promote dress code individuality because of religious aspects, mental health, and human experience.
Recently, more and more schools all over the country have turned to dress codes. Some people say that dress codes teach professionalism and protect students. However, schools should not have dress codes because dress codes target girls and limit their freedom of expression. They also are hard to enforce and students break them anyways. In my opinion I think the dress code should be altered. Dress coding systems have become substandard and defective simply because the lack of clarity amongst schools, majority rules only apply to women, and lastly student apparel differs amongst teacher opinion. To start off, most school districts have a lack of clarity amongst the dress coding system.
The idea that dress code is meant to halt the distracted nature of males is sexist, when instead we should be teaching males to control their impulses and actions. There is almost no evidence to support that dress codes improve focus among the population of either male or female students. Any girl who has attended a public high school understands the daily dilemma of dress code. On those scorching hot days as the school year approaches summer, many girls can be found scavenging through their closet for a “school appropriate” outfit or one they won’t melt into a sweaty puddle in. Her dresses will show too much leg, her tops will inappropriately expose her shoulder or collar bone, and her shorts will be too short — at least that 's what the school says. Dress code in modern day high schools should be boycotted because they are a violation to student and parents rights, sexist, out of date, a double standard, and they disrupt a female students education. It 's fair to agree with a policy that claims stringent dress codes increase the emphasis on academics and reduce the pressure of socioeconomic status; however, these dress codes violate the students First Amendment right to freedom of expression and the parents’ Fourteenth Amendment right to raise their children in their own way.

This is not to say that there are some people whose feelings land in the gray area in between. In recent discussion of dress code, a common question has been whether dress code is fair or not fair among all students. On the one hand we have parents, young women, and other members of society who argue that some schools take dress code too far.
Students can express their style and identity through their clothes. Students would like the freedom to keep up with latest styles and fashion and having dress codes takes that away. Many high schools have implemented dress codes that set rules for what students can and cannot wear while on school premises, and yet many people disagree with these policies. Though arguments can be made for either side, a dress code can have a very positive outcome for all parties involved. A fixed dress code promotes professionalism in a learning environment, and contrary to popular belief, it does not limit a student’s freedom of expression. Last but not least it encourages equality and acceptance among their peers. A dress code can be reasonable if used in proper situations that require certain attires.
