Are Students Ready? Algebra, Biology, and Government are only a few of the many classes that are required to be taken before a student is eligible to graduate from high school. These courses form the question, are these classes, that are so-called “required,” really allowing students to thrive after high school? Multiple college students who have begun their first semester of college are starting to reflect on their time spent in high school. Was their time stressing over that Algebra Ⅱ test really that important? So, the question arises, what courses should be required for students in high school so they can thrive when they go job hunting, or begin college? In the United States, “the variation among school system curriculums – from state to state, from community to community, and even from school to school – is enormous” (training curriculum). The reason for these differences is because of the size and the specialties of the school (charter, special needs, private). Here in the state of Michigan, the most common curriculum is the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC). The requirements for a high school student in Michigan under the MMC is to take four English credits, four math credits, one health/physical education credit, three science credits, three social studies credits, one visual, performing and applied for art credit, two world languages, and one online learning experience. Are any of these classes really beneficial to a students future right after high school? None of these classes teach a student the process of getting a credit card, a mortgage, or even financing for a car. These extremely important life needs are not being taught in school, so how do students know the process of buying a home, and how to handle having consistent payments that need to be paid off every month?
