Raging like a swollen river, the Gun Control debate has quickly taken center stage in our country. Swirling in a pandemonium of facts, fallacies, emotions, and lies, how can we pick through this issue from a Christian perspective? Even the Bible offers no direct answer. However, by wading with our knowledge of sinful nature into this river, a glimmer of light appears. Once imbedded on a firm foundation, we can view through the crystal lens of God’s Word and utilize the logic that He has given us to sort through the mud and find the nugget of truth.
We will not be silenced “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” These 27 words have meant a lot in the news lately. You see Facebook posts, tweet after tweet about this. I am not here to argue with you, but I feel like only one side of this topic is being discussed.

One crime in particular was the murder of eighty-seven-year-old Marie Smothers, who was shot and killed in a mobile home park in Slaughter, Louisiana by her eight-year-old grandson. According to the police this terrible tragedy may have been influenced by Grand Theft Auto IV, since the child was playing this video game prior to the homicide. What defines a person's idea of safety? For most people that ask that question the first thing that usually comes to mind is protection and guns are a good means of that. The United States has eighty eight guns per one hundred people, or about two hundred and seventy million guns, which is the highest total and per capita number in the world. Twenty two percent of americans own one or more guns; thirty five percent are men and twelve percent are women. The two main reasons for so many guns is that hunting and personal defense has become commonplace in our society.
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
Researching for this political debate and then listening to all of the presentations made me thought a lot about my own political beliefs and ideologies. It was good to have a topic for the debate that I actually felt strong about and believed in. It made it easier for me to research and to present because I believed the things that I was saying. My political leaning is definitely fiscally conservative but I am not a libertarian. It goes without saying what party I align with when it comes to taxes.

This staggering amount should already frighten someone who goes out and walks with their kids or takes a jog or even goes grocery shopping. This year it is projected that for the first time in decades a gun will have killed more than a motor-vehicle.
