Being a music educator, I find chapter four of “Healing at the Speed of Sound” to be very relatable and inspiring. The many benefits of the methods Carl Orff and Zoltán Kodály are explained in this section which is always a hot topic for music educators. The benefits of music also go further into the brain to help shape and regulate emotion. Finally, the troubles of audio processing disorders, a subject I know little about, are expressed. To begin, this book brings up a lot of interesting data and information on the methods of Carl Orff and Zoltán Kodály.
Why Music Should Stay For years, schools across America have provided electives to their students as a fun and challenging way to get them into different environments. Students have been able to do anything from Cooking to Theater because the options have been provided. But in recent years, some schools have dropped their electives and replaced them with more boring core classes, and I think it’s time to take a stance and save the electives. More specifically, music electives. Music electives have tons of benefits, including helping students’ grades and test scores, stretching their cognitive capabilities, and it sets students up for success in the future.

The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT)’s 2015 brochure “Music Therapists are Board Certified by the Certification Board for Music Therapists” gives a definition of what music therapy is: Music therapy is the specialized use of music by a credentialed professional who develops individualized treatment and supportive interventions with people of all ages and ability levels to address their social, communication, emotional, physical, cognitive, sensory and spiritual needs. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) offered a definition of their own on the AMTA website: Music Therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship

By using music therapy it can help people who can’t express themselves through speech, express it through music (Music Therapy.org). Music therapy is often used for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia. According to Concetta Tomaino, “... music is stimulating dormant areas of the brain that haven’t been accessible due to the degenerative disease” (Beck).
In many public schools, music education programs are being terminated, due to budget cuts and governmental program reforms; while some believe that the arts are secondary to courses such as math and science, it has been proven that musical education helps students to improve skills such as project management, team building, effective time management, leadership, cooperation and collaboration. Due to the fact that the benefits reaped from music education overwhelm any negatives associated with it, music education programs should be kept in public schools. Central Idea: Music treatment is the expert use of music and its components in therapeutic, instructive, and ordinary situations with people or groups to upgrade their quality of life and enhance their physical and wellbeing. Music helps a person to sleep longer and better. When listening to calm melodies it puts one into a positive frame of mind making them feel more at peace. It gives the patient self-respect and confidence, causing them to look forward to the next day and realize they have a purpose. Also, it improves heart rate and breathing by slowing it down, which makes it easier for one to sleep in a peaceful state (Relaxing Music).
