Music and Music Therapy. Music has positive properties unlike any other medicine. Music can travel in to a person’s mind and change the psychological aspects of the brain. Music can change the chemicals in your brain to alter your mood. Music, if it is happy and upbeat, can cause your brain to release more dopamine (the happy chemical). This obviously can make the person feel happier and more euphoric. This and many other reasons are why they use Music as types of therapy. Music can grab someone’s attention and make them feel more comfortable. This is why it is commonly used to treat autistic children. Autistic children have been shown to give Music therapist more positive outcome than traditional home therapies. As the American Music Therapy Association says, “Music therapy also provides avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words (What is Music Therapy,2016). This is why Music Therapy helps patient who don’t respond well to most treatment because they can express themselves in a different way. They have been known to use music to help patients recover after a major heart surgery. This because music can regulate someone’s blood pressure. This is all due to music’s magical stress relieving properties. According to Harvard Health Publication, “At Massachusetts General Hospital, a nurse-led team found that heart patients confined to bed who listened to music for 30 minutes had lower blood pressure, slower heart rates, and less distress than those who didn’t listen to music(“Using Music To Heal The Heart,”2009).
