Many couples who cannot have children turn to adoption. There are already many difficulties for couples in the adoption process, yet on top of that some couples also face unfair discrimination, because they do not follow a certain adoption agency’s policy. It not only hurts couples trying to adopt but the kids that are in the foster system as well. Michigan’s legislative branch should repeal HB 4188, 4189, and 4190 as it is a set of vague and unconstitutional laws that promotes discriminate against hopeful parents, especially LGBT parents, blurs the line between the separation of church and state, as well as hurts Michigan taxpayers and children who are in the foster system.

Allowing agencies to freely discriminate against couples ultimately leaves more kids who don't get adopted who then stay in foster care longer which is a disservice to Michigan youth. The average cost to the …show more content…

House Bills 4188-4190 allow adoption agencies with “sincerely held” religious beliefs to deny a couple to adopt if they violate these beliefs. Adoption should be determined solely on what’s best for the child. HB 4188-4190 allows adoption agencies to potentially reject any couple so long as they have a written policy for it. The law says “sincerely held religious beliefs” which can be open to a lot of interpretation, leading to people trying to take advantage of that. It leaves a lot of room to for agencies to turn away almost anyone so long as they claim it is a religious belief. The first amendment in the constitution states that, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". The government should not be funding something that so blatantly breaks that principle.
