Pharming Animals Over the recent years, scientists have been able to figure out how to genetically modify animals in the microscopic level. Before, scientist were able to modify animals in an aesthetic way like making them have multicolored strips of fur or making them bigger than they usually are. But now scientists are starting to modify animals by editing their genomes in order to help benefit from it. This has started a process called “pharming” which is when a scientist changes or modifies the genetic makeup of an animal to create a factory made up of animal for pharmaceutical reasons. It just doesn’t have make the animal suffer during or from its modifications. Sometimes the animal may not benefit from its modifications but it doesn’t suffer from it either. It’s a kind of “neutral” modification to the animal. There are some “neutral” modifications to animals like modifying its organs. Scientist can modify the organ of animals like pigs to be compatible with humans. The modification to the organs may help the animal or it may not but it isn’t hurting the animal. The animal will still be the same as it was before but now it just has an organ that is compatible with humans. Pigs’ organs are the ideal choice for this modification. Doctors are already “replacing defective human heart valves with pig valves” (43). It has become a normal procedure in the medical field. But it only works for a small procedure. If scientist genetically engineered the pigs’ organ to be completely compatible with humans, then there will be a surplus of organs for people that need them. People already kill pigs for their parts, pharming their organs will just “expand the market for pig parts” (44). Humans will benefit from the modified pig organs because there aren’t many human organ donors around. Plus the pig or the animal with the modify organs will not suffer from it because the scientist is just modifying it so its compatible with humans.
