Animal Testing -Rewrite In 2013, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine wrote, “Research Institutions Must Make the Replacement of Animals a Priority”, an article advocating replacing animals for medical research. The writer starts out by saying, “Animals used in medical research are frequently subjected to emotional stress, physical pain, and suffering. Scientists and institutions using animals for medical research and education should explore and implement non animal methods to the fullest extent possible, with the recognition that in some cases the practical challenges of developing non animal methods will not be overcome.” Concerns are raised when animals are subjected to pain and toxins during testing. The Americans for Medical Progress is a nonprofit organization that promotes the public understanding and support of animal use in medicine testing. The organization claims that, “Despite claims by animal rights activists, it is undeniable that animal-based research has contributed to significant improvement in the length and quality of our lives”. With this being said, many advancements have been made in medicine because of animal use. Cancer, for example, has medicines that have contributed 10.7% to the life expectancy. Advancements have also been made to HIV/AIDS therapies where researchers use animal models to develop new medicines to help with the therapy of AIDS. Following this further, medicines are continuously being tested on animals to help with the treatments of strokes, diabetes, Parkinson’s, hepatitis C, birth defects and many more. Although The American for Medical Process organization agrees with most of society that animal testing is cruel, they also believe that there is no better way to further our medicines to one day find a
