Every year several million animals die due to animal testing in for medical, psychological, and products research. Moreover, animal testing is something that shouldn’t be continued and for it is completely wrong and cruel. Animal testing started in the late 300’s BC. Aristotle and Erasistratus performed many experiments that involved living animals. Similarly, Galen, a greek physician, conducted animals research to explore the field of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
Numerous people have attempted to justify the use of such methods by putting down or rather, dismissing the animal as a creature lacking the mental capacities to be considered equals to that of a human being. In their book "Animal Experimentation : The Moral Issue" authors Robert M. Baird and Stuart E. Rosenbaum say, "holders of rights must have the capacity to comprehend rules of duty, governing all including themselves" (104). He then goes on to explain that "animals do not have such moral capacities" (Baird 105). And as a result of this "we can't violate their rights because they have none" (Baird 105). Dismissing the animal as nothing more then an object may not seem like the most reasonable defense against the use of animals for testing
There’s an element of second-hand embarrassment felt while walking to a job provided by the cosmetics empire and you notice the streets filled with people herding together like the atrocities they are protesting for: animals. These protesters, wearing makeup on their own, in order to not be mistaken for the ugly testing animal themselves, have allowed for the empire to grow into the untouchable powerhouse it is today, but it is suddenly not ok to get rid of these monsters whose only purpose is to take up space. The protests that are arguing for animals to have basic human rights are not interfering with the animal testing, but with the simple basic human rights of being able to get to one place to another. Think about it: have you ever been in a situation where you are stuck behind someone going slowly and there are other people surrounding you, making it impossible to get around that one slow person?
Although the experimentation of animals has furthered medical knowledge, it should not be allowed because it is brutal and animals are unable to give their approval. In order to do a study on humans it must be authorized by them, where animals are unable to give consent, which strikes questions in the world of science on whether this is morally acceptable. Although animal experimentation can result in saving the lives of millions, many find it to be cruel and unjust. Seeing as animals are unable to speak for themselves, they are still able to express their emotions through their behavior.
Animal experimentation has been an easy and ethically acceptable way to research and test medicines and treatments for humans since the time of the ancient Greeks. Animals opened the door for the scientists and philosophers of old to learn things about the human body that were previously explained with magic and superstition. Opponents of this act say that it is cruel to experiment on animals, there are other methods available to replace the cruel act of experimenting on living animals, and that the human bodies and animal’s bodies are totally two different features and the research often yields irrelevant results. The federal Animal Welfare or AWA passed the animal testing act in 1966 and amended in 1970, 1976, and 1985.
Humans experiment on other animals for a number of reasons, from understanding the body and organs to discovering world altering vaccines and medicines. The origins of animal testing in the United States can be traced back to the 1950’s. According to Kathleen Conlee, vice president of animal research issues at the Humane Society of the United States, and Andrew Rowan, president of the Humane Society International, animal testing first began when vast numbers of primates were captured to help develop a polio vaccine. Once a vaccine was created, researchers began using the excess animals to perform other experiments and research queries (Conlee & Rowan S31). Nowadays, drug and chemical research companies widely apply animal experimentation.
In the United States, animals lovers foundation estimated that in doing the scientific research and commercial testing, Scientists use about 26 million animals every year. They use animals to develop medical treatments, ensure the safety products for human use, secure the toxicity of medications, and other commercial, biomedical, and health care uses. I am going to discuss the views of these issues concerning the ethics that goes along with experimenting with animals in this passage. Firstly, animals may be subject to experimentation or be modified into conditions useful for gaining knowledge about human diseases or for testing human potential treatments. For example, it was discovered long ago that rats have similar genetic build-up and the identical systems as human being, so rats have been used along for experimentation.
