Ineffective Animal Testing Majority of animals have their fate decided at birth. Animal testing is questionable to the reassurance of absolute safety. Animals and humans react differently to types of drugs and chemicals. Cats, dogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, birds, etc. are the type of animals being manipulated. Animal testing has alternatives that help economically and effectively.
There’s an element of second-hand embarrassment felt while walking to a job provided by the cosmetics empire and you notice the streets filled with people herding together like the atrocities they are protesting for: animals. These protesters, wearing makeup on their own, in order to not be mistaken for the ugly testing animal themselves, have allowed for the empire to grow into the untouchable powerhouse it is today, but it is suddenly not ok to get rid of these monsters whose only purpose is to take up space. The protests that are arguing for animals to have basic human rights are not interfering with the animal testing, but with the simple basic human rights of being able to get to one place to another. Think about it: have you ever been in a situation where you are stuck behind someone going slowly and there are other people surrounding you, making it impossible to get around that one slow person?
Animal experimentation is unreliable, as animals are very different from humans, and it is highly abusive. Animals have been scientific test subjects since ancient times of Rome and Greeks. Animal testing has proved to be inhumane, unreliable, harmful to humans, and deadly to all. Animal testing is very ineffective because of the lack of similarities animals share with humans. “Animal data is so unreliable, that for decades, the tobacco industry used it to prove that nicotine is not harmful.
Animal testing has always interested me. I always knew without medical experiments conducted on animals none of our medical breakthroughs would have been made possible. However subjecting animals to pain and suffering creates a moral dilemma. In my research, I found that strict policies are put in place both federal and state. Also funding for animal based research is often difficult to obtain, and once it is, their experiments are heavily regulated.
Many people are not aware of how large animal tests and experiments have become throughout the United States and the world. Based on statistics from 2013, 1.04 million animals have been used in experimentation throughout the United States. This statistic is not including the over 100 million mice and rats used in experiments. In Canada, 3.33 million animals are forced into painful experimentation. While 128,873 animals are exposed to torture above the pain tolerance threshold of non-anesthetized conscious animals.
The year was 1997, Joseph and Charles Vacanti two researchers, took stem cells from bovine ears and grew an ear on a mouse’s back in a lab. (procon.org) This discovery led the researchers and more scientist to think about using other cells to graft skin for burn victims, and eventually new possibilities in organ growth. Each year in laboratories across the globe, animals and their parts are used to link necessary treatments and medical medications to the needs of both the human and animal species. It is often uncomfortable for people to think about using animals for testing.
Animal testing has improved the lives of millions of people over its years of operation but should not be thought of as a permanent solution. The act of physical animal testing is a dated way to improve human welfare. Modern day technology can be used to replicate the genetic makeup of humans and animals by eliminating harm and death completely. The continued developments in technology have the potential to replace immoral animal testing with virtual lab experiments.
Since the ancient times, the use of animals for experimental purposes has been a common practice. Physicians of these times would dissect animals with the intention of gaining knowledge. As animal’s testing became more popular, humans began to ask them self if this was the right approach in learning more about our human race. There’s no doubt that we as humans do not view animals on the same level as us and this is probably the main reason we began testing on them. I can infer that they redirected them self to dissecting animals because they were smaller and easier to control.
Researchers estimated over 26 million animals were used for scientific tests and commercial testing subject every year in the United States. Over the years animals were used to be tested on medical treatments, products for human uses, health care, and etc. The practice of researching on living animals has started since 500 BC. Opponents of this act say that it is cruel to experiment on animals, there are other methods available to replace the cruel act of experimenting on living animals, and that the human bodies and animal’s bodies are totally two different features and the research often yields irrelevant results. The federal Animal Welfare or AWA passed the animal testing act in 1966 and amended in 1970, 1976, and 1985.
In the “History of animal experiment in biomedical research”, it talks about animals being used for experiments. There was this belief among the Greek physicians that one could understand the meaning of nature by experimenting or exploring nature. Therefore animals were used human sickness, interpretations of other things were inaccurate. This is so naïve of them. Because what shows that dissecting an animal will lead to a possible conclusion.
Human Experimentation The looming concern of human experimentation was enough to deter some individuals from seeking the medical care that they needed for their well-being. The thought that trusted medical professionals had the power to perform unethical experiments on them while they were in their care was enough to let them live with whatever ailment that they had. By not seeking out the care that they desperately needed in some cases only lead to further problems. Several doctors abused their patients' trust for their own curiosities.
Should animals be suffering just because humans are trying to advance our medical techniques? Should they be forced to eat? Should people be allowed to torture them this way? Do you think so? In fact, more than 100 million animals are killed each year during scientific and commercial testing, in the U.S alone.
However, both sides agree that it would be beneficial to reduce animal suffering by finding alternatives to this practice. On one side of the spectrum, supporters of animal testing point out how valuable the practice is to scientists, and the medical advances that have stemmed from animal research. According to the Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR), “…practically every drug, treatment, medical device, diagnostic tool or cure we have today was developed with the help of lab animals” (“Benefits of Biomedical Research”). The FBR is clearly stating that, without the help of animal testing, medical advances would be nearly impossible.
“No matter whether it’s someone from the political left or right, we just need a voice to stand up and defend animal rights” a quote from Brigitte Bardot on animal experimentation. Animal experimentation has been going on for over 300 years and this is just what has been recorded in records. There are many types of test performed on animals:Draize Test: A laboratory test in which a cosmetic or drug is dropped into a rabbit 's eyes, which are held open with clips, to determine the level of irritation. Named after John Henry Draize, a twentieth century pharmacologist with the United States Food and Drug Administration.
It is true that animal testing requires a lot of investment. Not only that money is spent on advanced technologies, it is also spent to pay for scientists’ expertise on this particular field. In order for the scientists to do their research, they need suitable equipment and substances. Every year, the National institutes of Health finances between $12 billion to $14.5 billion on animal testing as indicated in a study done by the government (Bastach, 2013). Besides, scientists need to consider the fact that animals need to be sheltered, fed and cared for to keep them alive.
