6 April 2016 Living with Anxiety Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States. This was the somewhat reassuring statistic my doctor told me during my surprise visit to the hospital. At the age of 14 the term “Panic Disorder” held a strong connotation that I hadn’t fully understood yet. There are currently six different types of anxiety disorders: panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety, intense fear anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, and post traumatic stress syndrome. Think about something in your life that has some sort of impact on you. Now try to picture your life with out having that thing, how you would re-adjust your entire life because you'll forever not be able to have it. Having an anxiety disorder makes it physically impossible to ever be able to do or be in the presence of certain things. For instance, someone with an intense fear of heights will never be able to take they're child on a Farris wheel, or look out a window higher than five stories, or even be in an elevator long enough to think about how high they are actually going up. Cooke interviews another girl, Yasmin Jade who as an intense case of social anxiety. In her interview she shares the tragic story of how a girl had become house bound for the majority of her life because she was incapable of interacting with large groups of people. Having an anxiety disorder really has a hold on your life. The problems you are faced with will always be there making you unable to live the same life as someone with out anxiety. Accepting that you have a problem is the first step, often it is seen that people avoid treatment because they don’t want to admit that they have something mentally wrong with them. Anxiety disorders does in fact fall under the category of mental illnesses. To start off your coping process you need to admit to yourself that you have a mental illness, but to also keep in mind that that specific terms does not have to have a negative connotation. Anxiety disorders, even severe ones can be treated through certain coping methods. There are certain home remedies that can somewhat help manage anxiety such as, breathing techniques, exercise, and yoga. It’s important that if you choose to take the home remedy path that you make sure to follow your plan in order to keep your anxiety under control. The other way to cope with anxiety is to seek professional help. Though this can lead to heavy expenses it also can be very affective. Therapy along side medication is the top treatments suggested to cope with anxiety. Although it is an expensive alternative, it can give off the best results. Between the expenses and pressure to make sure you follow your coping plan, trying to manage your anxiety can just as easily cause
