In the recent presidential debates free higher education seems to be a reoccurring topic that causes widespread controversy. New plans to pay for higher education and the refinance of the current student loans have been brought up by both republicans and democrats in the presidential debate. High school students who hope to enroll in higher education institution, whether it is a four year college, community college or trade school can’t afford it because of their financial instability even with the help of government programs. Students who take out loans leave College with an average debt of 29,400. Student debt is the most collectable and non-dischargeable debt in America. President Obama’s plan for two years of free community college was one that was proposed at the beginning of this year. President Obama has put in place certain requirements to qualify for two years of free community college such as maintaining a certain GPA and having a low family income. According to Bernie Sander “[his] plan is to make the federal government cover 67% and the states to cover the remaining 33%” which is a very reasonable plan that that will help student all over America, but his opposition states that much of that money would provide a free education to students whose families can already afford it. It is very possible to reform sanders plan as we proceed for instance we will need to make sure that those families that are getting the funding absolutely need it. Free higher education should be considered for three important reasons economic growth, educational innovation and to provide equal opportunity for all Americans.
