Off by an inch, the tire crashed against the ice and the car slid across the road. Her smile dimmed, her appearance seemed to grow pale as terror spread rapidly across her face. All she could think of to do is to give up and that was not like her. She could not give up what would her family think, but as the car began to slide down the hill Lana knew that her life was about to change forever and there was nothing she or anyone else could do about it. Everything had been lost, her life, her dreams, her hopes, everything, everything but her heart. Her heart had gone to an 18-year-old girl who had recently received a heart transplant from a girl not much older than she was. Saint Luke's Hospital emphasizes that “During a heart transplant, a surgeon removes your badly working heart and replaces it with a healthy heart from a donor. The immune system sees the new heart as a strange object and can start to attack it” (What is heart transplant rejection?). What Saint Luke’s actually means is that if a heart attacks then it could harm one’s body severely. A person's body could end up worse than when they had their old heart or go back to the way it was with their original heart. If the heart does not attack then the new heart helps the body function regularly and efficiently. With a transplant after a someone's health is improved they can live a normal life because of the affect heart transplants have on the health. For example, in the book In a Heartbeat a girl gets a transplant after 6 years of having heart problems and afterward was able to live a normal life, go to school, and play sports. Lastly, The American Heart Association explains that “A heart transplant gives a patient with congenital heart disease the opportunity to have a normal heart with normal blood circulation” (“Heart Transplant”). When someone has congenital heart disease the blood in someone's body does not circulate correctly and could cause strokes, heart failure, and heart infections, and some children have it bad enough, they cannot go to school and live a normal life. The diseases are deadly and if someone with heart issues has a stroke, they could end up severely injured. If someone has had a heart transplant and they no longer have to worry about the issues that they could have had with their heart disease.With a new heart the blood that used to not circulate normally can circulate correctly and if the recipient was a child they could finally live a normal life and go to school.
