When it comes to the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI), most of us will readily agree that it has proven to be beneficial in many aspects of medicine, science and communications. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of protecting the valuable data stored. Whereas some are convinced that the benefits outweigh the risks, others maintain that we are left vulnerable to IT security issues. Though I concede that AI could empower humanity by its vast availability of gathered information, I still insist that the high risk for theft, fraud and abuse, in which we have placed ourselves, leaves us in a precarious situation. A report from Homeland Security states, “A range of traditional crimes are now being perpetrated through cyberspace. Basically what they are saying is that the same traditional crimes they were combating in the past, have now become more challenging to control due to the ability to massively distribute their cybercrime threats. In order to be more effective in apprehending the cyber criminals, the Secret Service has partnered with the National Cybersecurity & Communications Integration Center and the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center, where they widely share prosecutable cybersecurity information collected during other investigations. Cyber criminals have proven to be dedicated in staying informed on new advancements in computer technology. The reason for their tenacity could be due to the wealth accrued by the most capable cyber criminal. Some have become millionaires from these activities living the life of the rich, not to mention, reinvesting the money to develop more sophisticated cyber capabilities.
