It seems nearly every American has an opinion on guns and gun control. There are quite a few different views on this topic. Either democrat or republican, you may be for or against strict gun laws. For example, Mary Landrieu is a former democratic senator from Louisiana who had issues gaining support in the south. From 1997 to 2015 Mary tirelessly tried to bring to life her democratic views into the southern states. Being one of the very few democrats in her state and all surrounding, Landrieu was forced to take political courage and stick up for the issues she thought were most crucial. Many southern states are republican when dealing with political issues (Cohn). Louisiana has voted almost always with Republican views, especially when Mary was in office. With all the stipulation around Democrats in the south, Mary was deemed “one of the last southern Democrats” (Ball). Senator Mary Landrieu has undergone a series of multiple “humiliations” while trying to get re-elected. First, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said they would not spend any money supporting her. Landrieu had already lost a lot of support money in the race, therefore her campaign was broke. Late in the race, televisions in Louisiana stopped playing Landrieu's political ads altogether and lampooned her with other ads aired (Ball). Second, Landrieu partnered with president Obama and asked the senate to hold a vote on a bill regarding the Keystone XL oil pipeline (Ball). With Landrieu's already fleeting support, getting this bill passed would have earned her many more followers. When voted on, the bill needed 60 more votes in order to be passed (Schor). Only forty one of her constituents voted with her on the bill. Landrieu later said to reporters, “There's no blame, there's only joy in the fight” (Schor). After this, the race practically fell into the Republicans hands. Even with her campaign to return to Senate coming to an end, she still stuck to her unpopular democratic views (Schor). Even after she was struggling to gain support in the south, she tried to pass a bill that would essentially get her elected senator again. However, her fellow democrats chose to vote against her on the bill. Landrieu didn’t let this misfortune, and many others, stop her from sticking with her opinions. Landrieu has had an adulation for the democratic views and has not changed her hard headed opinions to this day. Mary Landrieu took political courage when she chose to become the senator in a very republican state.
