Minimum wage is an extremely controversial topic. It is argued at both the state and federal level to a great extent. Some believe that the minimum wage should be increased to $11 or even $15 an hour, advocating for adequate pay for decent living conditions. While others think that minimum wage should remain as is, or even lower. Unemployment is also an arguable topic. The topic of many political conversations nowadays entails the problem of unemployment in this country. Although some individuals, mostly liberals, argue that the unemployment rate has dropped significantly it should be noted that more than half of the jobs created have been part-time. These workers suffer lower wages and fewer benefits. With only 47.7% of adults in the United States working full time clearly indicates a deficit of employment in our country. Technology is advancing and becoming less and less expensive. Businesses are in the business of making money, not giving out amazing health care benefits and wages without any profit. In New York City, if you walk into a Panera Bread restaurant you will see one cashier and several machines, at a ratio to approximately 1:8, respectively. In the eyes of the company, this not only expedites the process of ordering but is also much more profitable. Fewer mistakes, fewer wages, less health care being paid. The large ordering screens may have a high initial cost but definitely, will be paid off in the long run. We see this more closely at department and grocery stores. Department stores have implemented machines where you can check the prices of items you wish to purchase. While in grocery stores, there are actually self-serving lines, in which you can pay for your purchases yourself with the help of an automated screen.
