Dress codes should not be implemented due to the fact that it lowers self-esteem, interferes with academic success, and continuously proves to be uncontroversial.
Numerous witnesses, as well as the amount of evidence, portray that dress codes have countlessly expressed they are not inclusive, equal, nor considerate. A report written by the NWLC has highlighted, “These rules aren’t neutral: many target girls, and especially black girls… Students report that black girls, and especially curvier students, are disproportionately targeted” (‘’School Dress’’). Sources read, “a sixth grader was forced to leave the classroom, in tears, for having braided extensions, which were against the school’s hair policy” (“ School Dress”). Young females considerably try to elevate their look with a unique hairstyle; especially young ladies of color. To a great extent, distinctive hairstyles are how most women create their signature look. To have this freedom of expression revoked, on top of being humiliated, can be detrimental to one’s esteem; it may even increase insecurities. A woman named Victoria Schantz exemplified that she “remembered feeling objectified by her teachers” (“School Dress”). I understand that feeling Schantz described because I too have felt objectified by the school. I remember being in sixth grade starving myself so I could look and wear outfits that were considered acceptable by “skinner” girls, but not so acceptable for “curvier” girls.
