You don’t get to fill them with your colors” (21) Parents often expect that their child will follow in their footsteps. Most parents also expect that their child will grow up the same way that they grew up and act the same way that they did, but they shouldn’t. A person is going to be who they are, and no matter how hard you try to control or change them, you can’t. Baba complained to Rahim how Amir was always buried in books and how he could never defend himself but let Hassan do it for him. Rahim contradicts this argument and says that he can’t change Amir and make him his perfect vision. He just needs to let Amir be himself. This shows that Baba believes that a boy who can’t stand up for himself will grow up to become a man that is useless. Baba believes that standing up for what is right is very important. I think that is why Baba didn't praise Amir when he was younger, because he didn't have the courage to stand up for himself but allowed Hassan to do it for him. Amir’s cowardness lead to the raping of Hassan. If Amir just stood up to Assef in the alley then things may have been different. I wonder what it would feel like if my dad never praised me for my accomplishments. Would I still be the same person? Or would I be a little different from who I am
