It is 2116 and everything about the world has changed. First, you are not allowed to live past the age of 21. Second, there are vast majorities of teams that could kill you for doing something wrong. For example, trying to outlive the 21 year life span. Everything in the U.S is futuristic where a majority citizens are robots and mazecars that you could talk to which could take you anywhere no matter what age you were. The tone of the story is scary and depressing. A reason why the novel is scary is because people didn’t want to die at age 21 and tried to stay alive which makes them afraid of the D.S or the sandmen. He also falls in love with Jessica at the end of the story. His mindset is to outlive 21 and to get to SANCTUARY which could potentially help him and Jessica survive. Since“...he’s a runner”(pg.147) Logan and Jessica are trying their hardest to survive. So that they don’t get killed for going against the rules. He always tries to get the thing that he aspires for the most. But I’ve got to try and find her.”(pg.109) He aspires to try and find Jessica before they get busted. Which before this a guy named Rutago came looking for her to kidnap her as she has been poisoned. When he finds Jessica and achieves what he aspired,”The door of the Loveroom was wrenched open. Logan was there.”Jess-this way!”(pg.112) So he actually finds her without getting busted by the children that were in the nursery. He always tried his hardest throughout his life. A section from the article the explains that is in the back cover it says,”In 2116 it is against the law to live beyond the age of twenty-one.” People rebel against this in large numbers. Logan was walking when he saw a protester that was protesting against this law and gave out papers saying,”REJECT SLEEP! RUN! If there are enough runners there won’t be enough homers. There won’t be enough DS men. It is written that the lifespan of man is three score years and ten, seventy years! Don’t settle for twenty-one. Run! Reject Sleep!”(pg.16) Since many people are rejecting sleep and some are approving of sleep then the whole country is going to be split in two. This could’ve lead up to be a repeat of the Civil War where people split up because some approved of slavery and some didn’t approve of it.
