It is 2116 and everything about the world has changed. First, you are not allowed to live past the age of 21. Second, there are vast majorities of teams that could kill you for doing something wrong. For example, trying to outlive the 21 year life span. Everything in the U.S is futuristic where a majority citizens are robots and mazecars that you could talk to which could take you anywhere no matter what age you were. The tone of the story is scary and depressing. He also falls in love with Jessica at the end of the story. His mindset is to outlive 21 and to get to SANCTUARY which could potentially help him and Jessica survive. Since“...he’s a runner”(pg.147) Logan and Jessica are trying their hardest to survive. So that they don’t get killed for going against the rules. He always tries to get the thing that he aspires for the most. When Logan was trying to find Jessica in the nursery,”...if you could avoid the robots there were always other children, conditioned and hypnotaped against invaders. But I’ve got to try and find her.”(pg.109) He aspires to try and find Jessica before they get busted. Which before this a guy named Rutago came looking for her to kidnap her as she has been poisoned. When he finds Jessica and achieves what he aspired,”The door of the Loveroom was wrenched open. Logan was there.”Jess-this way!”(pg.112) So he actually finds her without getting busted by the children that were in the nursery. He always tried his hardest throughout his life. Logan was walking when he saw a protester that was protesting against this law and gave out papers saying,”REJECT SLEEP! RUN! If there are enough runners there won’t be enough homers. There won’t be enough DS men. It is written that the lifespan of man is three score years and ten, seventy years! Don’t settle for twenty-one. Run! Reject Sleep!”(pg.16) Since many people are rejecting sleep and some are approving of sleep then the whole country is going to be split in two. This could’ve lead up to be a repeat of the Civil War where people split up because some approved of slavery and some didn’t approve of it. There was a war that could resemble what the U.S would’ve looked like if we had a war based on this. The “...Anger swept the ranks of the nation’s young. In his State of the Union address President Curtain had stressed the severity of food shortage, as world population spiraled toward six billion.”(pg.135) The war that is being progressed here is the nation having an entire argument on how many children a couple was allowed to have. Many believed that it was their choice but many didn’t feel that way. Others felt that they should listen to the rules no matter what and that is what
