Will year-round schools truly help diminish the summer learning loss? Schools districts all over the country have changed to a new kind of school calendar that runs year-round in hopes of giving students the best learning experience. These changes came at a time when the summer learning loss challenged students’ knowledge over the summer. The traditional calendar, which consisted of 180 total work days and a long summer break, had been broken up to several periods of in-session days with the breaks distributed throughout the year (Source B). Superintendents and teachers had hoped that this would battle against the summer learning loss by not giving it a chance to take effect. But even though year-round schools have the right intentions, the revised calendars are not any better in serving the students than the traditional schools are. Paul von Hippel, a sociologist at Ohio State University, had created a study on whether or not kids learned better in year-round schools than in traditional schools. His results, as recorded in Source C, indicated that students in year-round schools learn more in the summer, but seem to learn less than others during the rest of the year. von Hippel also said that according to his results “year-round schools don’t really solve the problem of the summer learning loss-they simply spread it out across the year.” This particular study also discovered that while year-round schools did not decline the summer learning loss it did help economically disadvantaged student with their learning. The time spent in schools over the summer resulted in a slight increase in reading abilities.
