Samuel Hernandez Miss Escarcega ADV ENG I 22 May 2023 Argumentative Essay: Choices & Destinies “She's the hopeful lady of my earth. / But woo her, gentle Paris, get her heart. / My will to her consent is but a part.” (1.2.15-17) This is a line from William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. The line comes from Lord Capulet, who is conversing with Count Paris about letting him marry his daughter. Count Paris wants permission, but Lord Capulet says that if he can make Juliet fall in love with him then he’ll allow it. This is an example of opinions changing choices, since when Count Paris hears Lord Capulet’s opinion, he changes his choice. This stands out with great importance because different perspectives can lead to safe answers. For example, the text states, “Romeo's a dishclout to him. An eagle, madam, / Hath not so green, so quick, so fair an eye / As Paris hath. Beshrew my very heart, / I think you are happy in this second match, /” The line comes from the Nurse, who tells Juliet to give up on Romeo and marry Count Paris. The two different perspectives show two different sides of the story, where one wants to make their own decision and another thinks they should follow the choices of others. This stands out with great importance because those giving genuine advice want to help those they are giving advice to. For example, the text states, “Romeo, away, be gone! / The citizens are up, and Tybalt slain. / Stand not amazed. The Prince will doom thee death / If thou art taken. Hence, be gone, away!” Yes on the opposing side this would prove that they can pretend to give advice as Benvolio then told the Prince that Romeo killed Tybalt, however, on the opposing side, it is most ideal that Benvolio said that Tybalt killed Mercutio because it proves that Benvolio was giving genuine advice. This shows also that maybe if Benvolio chose to tell Romeo to stay instead, this could provide a change in the outcome and proof because Benvolio gave Romeo advice that would’ve gotten him killed. Again, even though some may give advice knowing the advice is bad or untrue, it is important to note that those giving genuine advice should be listened to because as previously stated, those giving genuine advice want others to listen to
