The Debate of Whether College Should Be Free or Not
Is it fair that students barely beginning their lives as adults are handed massive bills specifically for a college education? Over 1 trillion dollars of debt is owed from student loans in America. It is outrageous that students are being robbed of nearly every cent they own and have to begin their lives in an unsettling amount of debt due to college expenses. While some people believe that college tuition should not be taken away, others disagree and support free colleges in America. College should be free in order to keep students from being in debt, to develop a better economy, and offer a successful future.

The fact that the amount of college debt surmounts the amount of debt for a common system of payment in America shows the need for a decrease or termination in payment for college. Lechner also mentions that state governments are underfunding colleges and with a decrease in state funding there is an automatic increase in college tuition. If state governments put aside more profits towards college tuition, many students will be able to avoid this debt they are currently facing. Also, since universities have the power to continue raising the price of college tuition, the government must take action and invest in public colleges and universities. In a separate article, Dennis O’Brien, former associate executive director of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, explains the comparison between college tuition a couple centuries ago to the tuition of college years later.
