It’s hard to see why cannabis is still illegal in the country. Marijuana is a very prominent and controversial issue in society today. As a kid growing up, you’re constantly told of the dangers of drugs, and since it is illegal, marijuana is drag and therefor it is dangerous.Marijuana is a drug that is always being talked about all over the media, debating on whether it should be legalized or not. The division between people’s belief on this matter, believing that this drug shouldn’t be legalized, and something it should be with some modification on the usage. It’s estimated that the tax revenue generated from marijuana would be upwards of $2.4 billion annually if it were taxed like everyday goods, and as high as $6.2 billion annually if it were taxed like alcohol and tobacco. The use of Marijuana has always been questioned but now is the time our country is at a time where the usage of the drug is at a peak and the issue needs to be addressed. It is no longer acceptable to not consider legalization because states within the country have already taken matters into their own hands but making it legal. The Counter arguments to legalization off marijuana would be studies that show smoking “weed” would change emphysema and lower IQ’s but smoking cigarettes or any tobacco product also cause emphysema and drinking alcohol is proven to harm your IQ and kill your brain cells. Amsterdam has shown us by example that legalizing marijuana would also be beneficials to out economy and society as a whole. The Amsterdam government believed that by legalizing marijuana and making it mandatory for medical personal to give paraphernalia out to chemical drug addicts, the chemical drug user would wither change their drug of choice of marijuana, or kill themselves off by over-dosing or infections due to insanitary living conditions.
