The legalization of marijuana. It is a topic mentioned quite often nowadays because of its rise in popularity throughout the American population. The reason why marijuana is talked about so often is that many people have differing opinions when it comes to being able to use it. Some of the American population does not see marijuana as an issue because they think it is not as harmful as some other drugs, and also some people see it as a treatment for certain physically-debilitating. On the other hand, scientists, doctors, and the rest of Americans view marijuana as a dangerous drug that should stay illegal because of the harmful effects that it can have on a person. Many scientists have discussed about how “studies of long-term marijuana consumers have not been done . . . our knowledge of the drug’s chronic effects is still limited” (Sullivan). Marijuana has not been around for as long as other drugs such as tobacco and alcohol have. However, as marijuana continues to be around for longer and longer, scientists feel the need to research the effects that is has in order to inform the public if it something we should worry about or not. The problem is, marijuana has not been around for the 50+ years that it took to find the long-term effects of tobacco and alcohol, so scientists are limited to what information they have to work with. To solve this issue, scientists have decided to use the effects of tobacco specifically to find the effects of marijuana because of the fact that tobacco and marijuana is both smoked. This may not be the best way, but as everyone else sees it, at least there is some information about it, even if it is not completely formed and solid
