With the undeniable truth, everyone must age and grow older. Although this is a natural process of life, not everyone is accepting of this. At this age, being an older adult you face difficulties such as aging, sexuality, relationship dynamics and having to face reality that you are not in your prime as you once were. Heart attacks, strokes, and other ailments are examples of this. However, just as there younger counterparts they still able to do somethings they were able to do in their earlier stages.
Chapter 12, Development and Aging, shows the development of learning and memory abilities across the lifespan, starting with infants. A human can start to learn in a mother’s stomach before birth. The human uterus is surprisingly a noisy place taking in all the sounds that they hear such as maternal talk, outside noises and heartbeats from the mother. Something that I did not know is, around 25 weeks of gestational age, a fetus’s brain and sense organs are sufficiently developed for the fetus to start perceiving and learning about the sounds they hear. I think that is interesting that a baby can pick up sounds from the outside.
Elder women 's longevity is increasing their LTC needs because the longer you live, more care is required as your body begin to deteriorate or not function as efficiently as before. In addition, women are at a greater risk for certain chronic conditions and disabilities, which will increase their LTC needs. Therefore, elderly women will need more assistance with their health and personal needs due to health risks and other factors that affect them. 4. Diverse women face more obstacles in aging than their white counterparts because health disparities exist between the two.
A multi-generational household is a household that includes at least three adult generations. This is becoming more common as the number has increased within prospective racial and minority groups. Ethnic groups of African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans are reported to have higher rates of multigenerational living opposed to the whites. Current trends are changing as the idea of homes looking similar to that of a nursing home becomes unpleasant. Multigenerational living also has its ups and downs as situations may occur that are stressful.
Menopause is the end stage of menstruation in a woman’s life. Her period stops and her body go through changes that no longer allow her to get pregnant (Omnics International, n.d.) Menopause is sometimes called the midlife change because it usually happens during the late 40s or early 50s. Those who are experiencing menopause will experience stop of menstrual flow, thinning and graying of their pubic hair, loss of fat tissue in the genitalia, thinning of the vaginal walls which will become drier and less elastic, decreased weight of the ovaries and uterous, decreased secretion of estrogen, loss of ligaments supporting the uterus and ovaries and skin become less elastic causing sagging of the breast and other body tissue (Saxton, Etten & Perkins,
Suzanne Moore writes in her article “What We Really Fear Is Old Age, Not Dying,” that the relevant way to die involves getting really old, which is terrifying. She also mentions whether it is a fright of dying of old age or actually a tremor of old people. People always express their disgust at the way old people are treated but they don’t want to see those old people unless they are fit, gleeful and hiding their diseases. The fact is that as we get older , we will tend to get sick and most of us are puzzled on the appropriate action to settle that myriad problems. The reality of life is taking care of those old folks seems low-status and feminized activity.
The number of senior citizens is growing. That means more families are grappling with elder law issues, including adult guardianship. An elder law attorney at the Law Offices of Clifford M. Cohen, in Washington, DC, discusses guardianship and incapacitated adults, whom the law calls “wards.” When your aging family members can no longer care for their own personal needs or make important decisions, the courts can appoint guardians to handle their affairs. In Washington, DC, the Superior Court of DC, Probate Division Court makes guardianship appointments.
The sixty-five and over population has grown to be the fastest growing group. Because there will be advances in nutrition and medicine, centenarians will be at one million by the center of the twenty-first century. Non-whites are to be expected to be one-third of the population by 2050. As of now, minorities are misrepresented because most of them do not have health insurance or care.
Growing old in America i feel that its a bitter sweet moment in life because transitioning from a younger person navigating through life living to build the American Dream to actually living the American Dream in your later years, to come to the conclusion to think about death on as life progresses, i know that death is inevitable so yes preparing for death can be a bit strange to do but according to the text research has indicated that older people think about death more than younger people and elders seem to be less fearful and have less anxiety about it ( Leming &Dickinson,2011) . Given that we we are young we care less about it because we think life is forever and we all do not know will it will happen.
Being Agender is pretty difficult considering cis people always assume you are a binary gender and doubt you, for me I have a hard time with clothing because of my curvy body type hips and butt to be exact. This makes it difficult to wear clothes we consider masculine. It 's pretty easy for me to find shirts that don 't make my chest stick out and there are ways to flatten my chest, but when it comes to bottoms there aren 't any options (from the research I 've done). I get really annoyed how I 'm preserved as a women/ girl, before puberty it was much easier to wear whatever. Every popular image you see of non binary is usually white, dfab, and skinny which affects non binary trans people giving us an image which unfortunately not a of a
In some cases, it has been observed that women in their mid to late thirties hit menopause much earlier than others. While, others don’t experience menopause until their mid to late fifties. The majority of women experience the change in their late forties and early fifties, with as many as ten to fifteen years of premenopausal symptoms. Some women have very few symptoms associated with menopause.
I enjoyed your discussion post because I can relate to the geriatric setting on a personal level. When my father was alive he resided in an independent living facility in Ohio and I live in Georgia. My father perception was he was independent, but in reality my sister managed all his finances and I handled all his medical concerns with his multitude of comorbidities. I made sure he signed consent forms with all his physicians, nurse and therapists that I was able to contact them by phone to obtain information on all his appointments, procedures and therapies. So, I was that family member that explained everything to my father in terminology he could understand before he consented.
Everything’s stuck to him I think age does negatively affect two peoples ability’s to do what they want to do or has plan on too, raise a child and still maintain a relationship. Age can negativity affect the life or life they have planned you want. In everything’s stuck to him it states “On this one Saturday night after he finishing his work upstairs the boy stayed in the dentist office and called a hunting friend” (986) He called his friend he hasn’t talked to in a while, to just to talk which shows that the boy really has not time for himself or any free time.
Aging Apart from battling all the age related conditions, now you have to deal
For my interview, the aging individual is a person I have known my whole life. Though she is not blood related, she is considered family, and an important person in my life. I chose her because I have seen her go through the aging process in a positive, and inspirational way. She has defied the norm that a woman needs a man in her life, yet she has lived her life without being in a single relationship. I have structured this interview to make it more like she is telling me her story.
