Animal testing is cruel, unjust, and wasteful, and it needs to stop. It is used to test cosmetics, to gain scientific knowledge, and for tests in schools. The Humane Society states that animal testing is tests performed on live animals for basic biology, medicinal, safety, or health research. Even small procedures have the capabilities to cause the animal high stress or discomfort. Some animals are used in future experiments, but most are killed soon after the tests.
Animal testing has been used by scientists to test drugs and makeup products for many years. They have been kept in labs, poked, prodded at, observed, forced to inhale, eat, and wear substances that have killed them. Millions of animals have died each year because of this testing, and it needs to be stopped. Animal testing should not be continued because it is ineffective, it wastes lives, and is inhumane. Animal testing needs to be discontinued because it is ineffective.
Animal Experimentation is ethical There has been an ongoing debate whether animal experimentation is ethical and should be allowed. While many people disagree with it because they claim that it is ethically wrong to experiment on animal, many people disagree and think it should continue to be allowed. Those who favor animal experimentation argue that the benefits outweigh the negatives. Animal testing has led to a significant increase in medical discoveries and has saved millions of lives.
In 2012, cardiovascular diseases alone killed 17.5 million people. If such diseases are capable of killing this amount of lives, how do our kind survive? Humans have no distinct qualities that they could use in nature. The only redeeming quality they have is their complex brains. Throughout history, starting from the homo sapiens during the Stone Age, humans have survive through the tools they create.
If animals feel pain the same way humans do, why do we test on them, but reject the idea of testing on other people? The simple fact is, animal testing, no matter what it’s for, is inhumane. The case of animal testing is either overlooked or not being pushed hard enough. The controversy surrounding animal testing includes; the harming done to the animals’, supplementary forms that could/ should replace almost all animal testing, and why we shouldn’t use animals to test drugs because they differ from us genetically. Using companion animals to test our medical differences is completely absurd.
Welfare, as defined by the Cambridge dictionary, can be seen in terms of “physical and mental health and happiness”, while priority, as defined by the Oxford dictionary, is "the fact or condition of being regarded or treated as more important than others”. The ethics of human welfare taking priority over animal welfare has long been debated. Although as a human, it is natural to prioritise human welfare over animal welfare, but in my opinion, it should not be supported. To justify my stand, I will be examining animal testing in labs, emotions of animals, and the use of animals in products.
Researchers estimated over 26 million animals were used for scientific tests and commercial testing subject every year in the United States. Over the years animals were used to be tested on medical treatments, products for human uses, health care, and etc. The practice of researching on living animals has started since 500 BC. Opponents of this act say that it is cruel to experiment on animals, there are other methods available to replace the cruel act of experimenting on living animals, and that the human bodies and animal’s bodies are totally two different features and the research often yields irrelevant results. The federal Animal Welfare or AWA passed the animal testing act in 1966 and amended in 1970, 1976, and 1985.
In discussions of animal rights, one controversial issue has been animal experimentation. On the one hand, skeptics argue that animal experimentation is unnecessary and cruel as there are other “alternatives”. On the other hand, advocates contend that animal experimentation is essential to medical progress. My own view is that animal experimentation is needed in order to improve human health. Animals and humans have similarities and differences that benefit both humans and animals alike in medical terms.
Animal testing is defined as “the use of non-human animals in research and development projects, especially for purposes of determining the safety of substances such as foods or drugs” (Dictionary.com). This experimentation has been practiced since around 500 BCE, and has allowed the human race to discover many things that otherwise would have not been discovered (ProCon). The use of animal testing has increased, due to its many necessary benefits, such as: helping form vaccinations and uncovering new diseases in the specific species being tested on (AALAS). However, many animal activist groups such as, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), have spoken out against the issue. These groups claim animal testing to be “inhumane”
Animal testing is not ok for so many reasons. The first I have to say is about the hardship and pain to the animals. Animals feel pain along with humans, so why do we test on them? What if a bunch of giant animals took you from your natural home, nearly starved you, then tested on you with weird equipment in someplace strange? Yeah, pretty awful.
Animal testing should be banned because it is an unethical process that subjects animals to so much pain. Although comical, this scene may be quite accurate when describing the passion that animal lovers have when it comes to the touchy subject of animal testing. For centuries, animal testing has been used in the medical research field, however many are now beginning to question whether it is ethical. Millions of animals are killed per year due to animal testing, so is this practice worth banning? Animal testing is a controversial subject, with supporters pointing out the medical advances that have stemmed from animal research and animal rights activists declaring it cruel and immoral.
Every year, millions of animals were suffering or killed due to scientific research. Some animal rights groups suggest that we should ban animal experiments because use animals for experimentation is cruel and animals should have the same right of living as human beings. A report from U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that more than 100 million animals are killed in U.S. laboratories for biology lessons, medical experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing. There are some other people believe that the death of animals will help and save millions of human lives. Personally I believe that the experimentation on animals for scientific and medical should not be stopped.
