Art Analysis: Michelangelo Michelangelo is widely considered to be one of the best, if not the best, artists of the Renaissance period. He was born in 1475, (history.com Staff, 2010) and lived to be 88 years old, so there is much to discuss about him as he had plenty of time to work on his art. Michelangelo was famous for being a master sculptor, as that was his utmost favorite art form to do. He did however paint frescoes when he was asked to, such as the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and did a absolutely fantastic job on them. The first piece of art work that I’ll look at is Michelangelo’s “Pieta” which is a marble sculpture with a height of 5 feet and 8 and a half inches (Stockstad, M., & Cothran, M, 2014). Marble was one of the most common materials to have sculptures as it is a very solid material, other mediums which people used consisted of; “stone, wood, bronze, and terra-cotta” (Sculptors at Work, n.d.). Michelangelo had much more life like sculptures compared to other artists of his time, when looking at his works of art it is easy to see the physical features that he put on them which makes it seem very life like. Another aspect to this sculpture that I did not see at first which is part of the iconography of this sculpture, was that he has horns on his head (Michelangelo Gallery), which were not looked upon badly as they would be today. Back when this sculpture was made, horns were generally associated with prophets because of some translation error in the Bible that occurred (Michelangelo Gallery), so the people of this time would have been able to recognize that
