Do you like helping people through their problems? If so, the next question is, do you like being creative? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then an art therapist is the job for you. I am interested in this job because I love the creativeness involved in art. I also enjoy helping people through their problems and helping them overcome the problems. I remember when I helped someone who was extremely stressed. I sat down and let them tell me what was wrong and what was going on. After they explained everything, I helped them write a to-do list, in order of importance, and watched their stress decrease. Even though art has been used for thousands of years to relieve stress, it has only started to be used since the twentieth century. At the beginning of the twentieth century, doctors realized that people expressed themselves in drawing, or coloring, after a traumatic experience. Now art therapists work with a wide range of clients and settings. They work with young children to senior adults. Each client is different. This means that the process and having them open up is different for each client. Art therapists can work with schools, hospitals, senior centers, rehabilitation centers, jails, community centers, and many more places. Basically an art therapist can work anywhere that involves people. One disadvantage of being an art therapist is that they are mostly needed in large cities. So with me living in a small town, I would most likely have to move to a larger town. By moving to a larger town the number of people who are art therapists could be greater. All the clients will have to do is express them in the form of art that works best for them. Usually it is easier to get a child to open up to the process. The adults are a bit more reluctant in opening up and less accepting of the process. The reason why it is so different between the ages is because kids tend to enjoy themselves more while adults stress a little bit more about the process. The length of the process depends on the results that are being seen and the barriers the client has overcome. By results, I do not mean the artwork they are making. Instead, the results are for the better, that the client is happier. This is the beauty of art therapy. The client does not need to be an amazing artist; they just need to be familiar with art to some degree. The reason is because the final product does not matter, it is the process that gets the client to the end of their treatment that
