When asked to describe his pull towards the stage, American author and playwright, Arthur Miller stated boldly and passionately, “Being a playwright was always the maximum idea. I'd always felt that the theater was the most exciting and the most demanding form of writing one could try to master (interview).” Miller crafted his first play when he was only nineteen years old and from there continued to produce an array of beautifully written works. Born in 1915 in Harlem, New York to Isidore and Augusta Miller, Arthur grew up accustomed to a wealthy lifestyle before his family lost all they had when he was fourteen in the disastrous Wall Street Crash. Fueled by determination Miller worked to pay his way through the University of Michigan where he began mastering stage writing and studied under professional playwright Kenneth Rowe (bio.com). Completing his inaugural play in only a week Miller garnered his first awards of many, the University of Michigan’s Avery Hopwood Award. However, not all of Miller’s plays went on to gain success, in his first piece to make Broadway, Death of a Salesman, Miller received dismal reviews before the play was pulled after only a handful of performances.
